An important part of teacher competence is the ability to analyze complex classroom situations, such as being able to identify a problem, figure out what caused the problem, understand students’ incentives for behaving in particular ways, and also to take appropriate action following this analysis. There are a number of studies, however, which report that beginner and novice teachers’ analyses of classroom situations are typically simpler and more descriptive than are analyses made by more experienced teachers. Since assessment has been shown to have a great impact on student learning, an assessment methodology called the “Interactive examination”, has been developed in order to assess, as well as to support, student teachers’ learning of analytical skills. The “Interactive examination” has been used for several consecutive years at Malmo University and research has shown that it can indeed be considered a valid instrument for assessing student teachers’ analytical skills, and that this methodology can also support student learning. This workshop will focus on the assessment of analytical and reflective skills in teacher education, as these skills are assessed through the “Interactive examination”. Specifically, participants will be shown, and also have the opportunity to try for themselves, how:

  1. Students’ analytical skills can be elicited and assessed through the use of digital video and scoring rubrics.

  2. Students’ reflective skills can be elicited and assessed through the use of model (or professional) answers and scoring rubrics.

Anders Jonsson currently holds a position as an assistant professor at Kristianstad University College, Sweden, but is also doing research on assessment of professional competence at the Centre for Profession Studies (CPS) at Malmo University.
